Programs & Services

The Youth Employment Strategy is the Government of Canada's commitment to help young people, particularly those facing barriers to employment, get the information and gain the skills, work experience and abilities they need to make a successful transition to the workplace.

  • Skills Link will provide funding for community organizations to help youth facing barriers to employment - such as single parents, aboriginal youth, you living in rural and remote areas, and high school dropouts - develop the skills, knowledge and work experience they need to participate in the job market.

These youth will benefit from a new client-centered approach designed to provide tailored supports and services they need over time to help them find and keep a job.

  • Career Focus will provide funding for employers to help post-secondary graduates get career-related work experience and develop advanced skills. Ultimately, this program will increase the supply of highly skilled and qualified people in Canada.

  • Summer Work Experience will provide wage subsidies that create summer employment opportunities for secondary and post-secondary students, and support the operation of summer employment offices. This program will be delivered in partnership with various private, public and not-for-profit groups. Summer Work Experiences will tell students about career possibilities in their communities, provide them with job search assistance, tools and techniques, and introduce them to local businesses as potential employees.

  • The Linkages Program. Linkage clients are youth ages 18 to 24 who have not completed post secondary training and have not made successful transition to the labour force. Clients must also be Non EI eligible. The linkages program provides 26 weeks of career related employment, the opportunity to participate in career planing workshops, and to earn a completion bonus of up to $470 towards the cost of post-secondary education. Job placements may be with private or non-profit employers. Employers hosting a job placement are provided a wage subsidy of up to $5.00 per hour to a maximum of $4,680 per position. Community based agencies responsible for monitoring, administering, and providing the required employment support to clients are eligible for a 15% administrative fee(of wages plus bonus). For more information contact your local Department of HR&E at (709) 466-4046 or you can contact 1-800-563-6600 or visit http://www.lmiworks.nl.ca/.
